Nacido en Carthage, Nueva York, el 16 de enero de 1948, John Howard Carpenter mostraba una temprana vocación cinéfila. Con 14 años había rodado cuatro cortos en 8 mm: Revenge of The Colossal Beast, Gorgo vs. Godzilla, Terror from Space y Sorcerers from Outer Space. Los títulos indican de manera clara las bases de su futura cinematografía. Con 15 años, creó su propia productora, Emerald, donde rodó Warrior and the Demon y Gorgon, the Space Monster. Con 17 años se dedicó a publicar su propio fanzine: Fantastic Films Illustrated. Con sólo 22 años, ganó el Oscar al mejor cortometraje por "La resurrección de Bronco Billy" Además de su clara inclinación por el cine John Carpenter componía las bandas sonoras de sus peliculas, le entusiasmaba la nueva era technologica que a principios de los 80 marcaban muevas tendencias sonoro - culturales. Una de las piezas básicas de sus composiciones es este maxi single editado para la película Asalto a la comisaría del Distrito 13.
